Ask three web designers what a website costs and you will get three answers and a lot of “it depends”. It does depend, but not on anything mysterious. Here is what the money actually buys, with real numbers.

The four price bands

Do it yourself on a builder (£10 to £40 a month). Wix, Squarespace, GoDaddy and the like. The software is cheap; your evenings are not. It works for a one-page presence if you are happy to learn the tool, write the copy yourself, and live with rigid template limits and sluggish mobile loading.
A freelancer (£500 to £3,000). Huge range because “freelancer” covers a student with a pre-made theme to a twenty-year developer. At the bottom you get a theme with your logo dropped in. At the top you get a proper site, written with you, built to be found on Google.
Where We Sit
A small studio (£499 to £3,500). This is where we sit. Our Flash Launch is £499 (delivered in 3–5 business days), a Commercial Business site with quote forms and local SEO setup is £1,299 to £1,990, and an online shop or custom web app starts at £1,999 to £3,500. Fixed, in writing, before work starts. Engineered on sub-second Next.js with zero plugin bloat and 100/100 Core Web Vitals.
An agency (£5,000 to £25,000 and up). Account managers, design rounds, a project plan with milestones. Worth it when the brand work is the point or the site is genuinely complex. Overkill for a plumber, solicitor, accountant, or clinic who needs five to ten fast pages and a quote form.

What moves the price

Pages. Five pages and twelve pages are different jobs, mostly because of the next item.
Who writes the words. Content is the thing that stalls most projects. If the quote assumes you will supply finished copy, expect the launch date to slip. We write the pages with you, which is built into the price.
Functionality. A contact form is free. Online booking, quotes with photo upload, members' areas, CRM pipeline routing, and payments are where the cost is, because they are where the engineering is.
Photography. Stock photos make a site look like everyone else's. A half-day with a local photographer (£250–£350) is often the best money in the budget.
SEO. A site built to be found costs more to build than one that merely exists, because the structure, the pages, the metadata, schema, and technical basics are done properly from the start.

The costs nobody mentions until the invoice

Domain name: about £10 to £15 a year for a .co.uk. Paid directly to the registrar; you should own it.
Hosting: £0 to £20 a month for high-speed edge cloud CDN (Vercel). Traditional WordPress hosting is often billed at £30 to £80/month with sluggish servers.
Email: Google Workspace or Microsoft 365 is £3.30 to £6 per person per month. Not a website cost, but it arrives at the same time. Never use free cPanel mail; it fails deliverability.
Looking after it (Care & Updates): updates, backups and security. On WordPress, either you spend hours updating plugins or pay £60 to £150/month. On modern Next.js edge builds, there is no database to hack, no plugins to break, and zero monthly builder tax.
VAT. Most quotes are plus VAT, which is a fifth (20%) on top. A £5,000 quote becomes £6,000. Always check before you compare.

Three questions to ask before you say yes

01
Is the price fixed? A day rate with no cap is a blank cheque. Insist on a written scope with an agreed total price in British Pounds.
02
Who owns it? Some builders keep the site on their own platform, so leaving means starting again from scratch. With us, your domain, repository code, and hosting are 100% yours.
03
What happens after launch? If the answer is silence, budget for the care yourself.
